Freshwater pearls
info
We use freshwater cultured pearls. They are formed in freshwater mussels into which a small piece of mantle tissue is introduced. The mussel reacts by depositing layer upon layer of nacre (aragonite + conchiolin). The longer the growth period, the thicker the nacre layer and, generally, the higher the luster (shine).
Freshwater pearls are generally composed entirely of nacre (no solid nucleus), which is why they are resistant to chipping. Their shape and color are determined by the type of oyster, water quality, nutrient availability, and growth period. Natural variations in surface, shape, and luster are common and characteristic.
Care instructions
- Avoid contact with chemicals: perfume, cream, hairspray, cleaning agents, acids
- "Last on, first off": Put on pearls last and take them off first.
- No water: do not shower, bathe or swim while wearing pearl jewelry.
- No excessive sweating: Pearls are sensitive to sweat and heat.
- Wipe after wearing: with a soft, slightly dry cloth, not a silver polishing cloth.
- Do not store in an airtight container: Pearls require minimal humidity, otherwise they can dry out.
- Store separately: softly padded, away from metal or gemstone jewelry (risk of scratches)
- Do not clean pearls in an ultrasonic bath: Never clean pearls in an ultrasonic bath.
Important: Pearls are made of nacre. Dullness, loss of luster, or flaking are primarily caused by chemicals, dryness, or friction – not by "material defects".
Responsibility
Pearl farming is a form of aquaculture. It can secure regional incomes, but depends on water quality and ecological conditions. When selecting our pearls, we pay attention to traceable supply chains and consistent quality, and we prefer farms that focus on sustainable management and long-lasting stocks.
Real pearl vs. imitation
Genuine pearl: biological structure consisting of nacre, growth rings, individual luster, slight irregularities
Glass or plastic bead (glass wax bead): industrially manufactured, uniform surface, lacquered or coated surface, no organic layer structure
Our pearls are genuine freshwater cultured pearls, not coated imitations. Each remake is handcrafted with care.
metals
Gold-plated silver (information & care)
Everything that comes into direct contact with the skin around the ear is made of gold-plated 925 sterling silver. The base is sterling silver, topped with a layer of real gold that creates the warm hue. Over time, this gold plating can wear off due to friction, perspiration, or contact with water and cosmetics, making the silver underneath slightly visible. This is typical of the material and not a defect. Carefully removing the jewelry before showering, exercising, and sleeping, as well as storing it in a dry place, can extend the life of the gold plating. In many cases, gold-plated jewelry can be replated later.
We source our gold-plated silver elements from German companies.
Sterling silver (information & care)
Our silver jewelry is made of 925 sterling silver. The alloy contains 92.5 percent silver and a small percentage of other metals that make the material more durable. Sterling silver can tarnish over time. This is due to oxidation, a natural reaction with substances from the air, skin contact, or cosmetics. The resulting discoloration is typical of the material and not a defect. The shine can be maintained by storing the jewelry in a dry place, removing it before showering, exercising, and sleeping, and occasionally cleaning it with a silver polishing cloth. We source our silver components from German companies.
Gold-filled wire
For select jewelry pieces, we use gold-filled wire. This involves permanently bonding a significantly thicker layer of real gold to a metal core. The gold layer is considerably thicker than in standard gold plating, making it more resistant to abrasion and more colorfast. Gold-filled wire is considered a durable material, particularly suitable for delicate wirework, and retains its golden hue for extended periods of normal wear. As with other materials, careful handling, removing jewelry before showering, exercising, and sleeping, and storing it in a dry place are recommended. We source our gold-filled wire from German companies.
